Peter Davison victim of Internet death hoax (and other adventures in social networking)

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today:
• In case you needed another reason to avoid the horror that is Applebee’s… Applebee’s Overnight Social Media Meltdown: A Photo Essay

• Oh, this is marvelous. Is Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood the greatest television show ever made?

• As my reader RogerBW says, “In case you didn’t think copyright was broken: turns out it can be suspended as ‘punishment.'” Antigua Government Set to Launch “Pirate” Website To Punish United States

• This is awful. So glad I didn’t hear about this until after it had been debunked — I would have been very upset. Peter Davison Victim of Internet Death Hoax

The link to the Peter Davidson Death Hoax got mangled up, it includes an extra preamble to your own site:

That’s what happens when you accidentally leave off the “http://”. Fixed now.

I’m afraid that both the Davison and the Applebee’s thing seem to me like reasons to (continue to) avoid social media. Things snowball far too easily when people pass them on without doing any sort of verification.

Look, Applebee’s was already on my don’t-ever-eat-there list just cause it’s food is plastic-nasty. But, then last fall their NYC Metro Area CEO Zane Tarkel (?) Farkel(?) can’t remember…but, whatever…started ranting on Fucks Snooze about he’s going to start cutting people’s hours in response to “Obamacare”. Then there’s the paid sick days issue, the paying an unsustainably low minimum wage issue, the putting people of color in the lowest paid positions issue, … this last is just frosting on the shit cake.

I’d want that ‘pastor’ to get picketers outside her ‘church’.

And…Woo-Hoo! Way to go Antigua!

Interesting issue. Also interesting that game of chicken the US decided to play.

Forgot to mention my fuller reaction to the Antigua thing. It’s not, for me, about whether the site gets set up or not; that’s probably just a negotiating ploy. It’s that the WTO is entirely prepared to withdraw copyright protection on an entire country’s creative output in order to punish that country. Are you a content creator? Do you think copyright works in your favour? Did you know you’d signed up to a contract where it can be taken away from you in a snap of someone else’s fingers?

The Mister Rogers article is wonderful. Having grown up outside the States, I completely missed out on him, but everything I’ve seen and read about him ever since has been really moving. How lucky you folks are, who grew up with his show.

The clip with the boy in the wheelchair made me weepy… and then I saw this.
