Being reluctantly fair, fifty years ago it wasn’t usually so hot that this was a problem. So many elderly dog-owners may actually need to be told. (Similarly with advice to carry water when using the Underground in hot weather.)

Leave the window cracked a bit…dog will be fine for a while. Especially if the car is parked in the shade and you’ve brought water for them. Not everywhere lets you bring dogs with you, but plenty of people have their dogs with them most places. Are you supposed to take the dog out of the car and tie it up outside?
