What’s left of a sewer at the excavations at Vindolanda, once a Roman fort. Water still runs neatly down and away from the remains of the small village inside the fort.

Never underestimate the military effects of decent drainage and a culture that approves of washing.

I was there last year!! After walking around the grounds and visiting the museum, we were able to chat with one of the archaeologists who was digging near the entrance, which was fun. Very cool place.
