gender-swapping Lord of the Rings

By Durin’s beard, this is magnificent!

Annis at LiveJournal set out to find amazing actors to cast in a Lord of the Rings movie. The only caveat was that they had to be of the opposite gender of the characters in the book… and similar to the gender-matched actors who appeared in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

A taste of her results:

Cate Blanchett Lord of the Rings

Phyllisa Law Lord of the Rings

See all the rest at LiveJournal.

Hollywood is not kind to women. And yet… there are so many incredible female actors who’ve managed to carve out unique spaces for themselves. They just need more opportunities to show off. It shouldn’t be a fantasy to imagine them in juicy roles like these.

Far too pretty to play Gollum, even in the pre-Ring stages. You need someone more… eclectic and normal-looking.

And I agree, swap Helen Mirren as Gandalf and have Judi Dench play Saruman.

I know very little about Phyllida Law, and while I think Hellen Mirren would be great as Sauroman Saruman, I’d rather see Mirren as Gandalf. One of the places online I saw this (io9 maybe) was kicking around the idea of Angelica Houston as Sauroman Saruman.

Saruman ;) (there is, of course, a Sauron, though).

Blame Tolkein for having two villains with similar names (I don’t doubt that in the Silmarilion which I’m not even trying to spell right there’s a linguistic explanation of how the two names are significant in elvish and so on…. but seriously it’s confusing)

This is great fun. I agree with Dr. Rocketscience regarding Helen Mirren as a preferable Gandalf, though.

And also – I’d swap Keira Knightley as Legolas with Emily Blunt.

Never! I am emphatically not a fan of Keira Knightley, I’m afraid.

Seeing Paul Bettany in this made me wonder if there was ever a movie where he played Cate Blanchett’s brother.

Pity, I think judi Dench would have made a great Gandalf.

Thought the casting was mostly quite good, except Gimli should be played by Melissa McCarthy and Geena Davis could be an elf.
