is this the worst Memorial Day weekend for movies ever?

Memorial Day at the movies 2013 Epic Hangover Part III Fast and Furious 6

I cannot remember another Memorial Day weekend for which I gave all the wide releases a red light.

Check out my reviews: The Hangover Part III, Fast & Furious 6, and Epic.

Ugh.

(It’s a big holiday weekend here in the U.K. too, but since Fast & Furious 6 opened here last week, it’s only Epic and The Hangover Part III opening wide this weekend. Still depressing.)

It may be the worst Memorial Day opening, in terms of reviews, but people will be turning out in droves for “Fast & Furious 6” (*snort*). And never underestimate family audiences starving for a new animated film, especially since “The Croods” was the only one out there for two straight months.

I’ve noticed not as many people turning out for “Hangover 3” last night… fingers crossed it’ll bomb and we’ll never see another sequel again.

I’m appalled at how well The Croods is doing…

The Croods has a 69% Fresh rating on RT… and it had the co-director of How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch behind it. Word of mouth on it was good, hence that 4x multiplier.

I know you didn’t like it, but not everyone likes the same thing.

Same goes for Epic, 1st place in both US and UK. I reproduced some actual quotes from RT in the movie review thread… appalling is the right word.

Fortunately, I still haven’t gotten around to seeing all the movies that came out earlier in the month, so this weekend, I might see Star Trek Into Darkness or The Great Gatsby or Stories We Tell or Before Midnight. And when I finally have a chance to see them, some of them will be good and some of them will be lousy. But if I pick one of the lousy ones, I can just move on to the next film. The important thing is that I bypass Fast and Furious 6 altogether.

I was thinking that earlier! Don’t we normally get at least one decent new release? This sucks.

I think 2009’s tandem of Night at the Museum 2 and Terminator Salvation was far worse. I know you didn’t like F&F6, but you’re clearly in the minority on that.
