This past Saturday, I had the honor of attending the summer fete — fun-and-fundraising festivities — at a primary school in Leicestershire. It was my first such event, and now I truly feel that I have experienced English life in all its glory. Including the maggot racing. 50p a go; if your maggot wins, you win £1.
Yes, those were real maggots:
And yes, that was an official maggot-racing board. I never knew such things existed, and now I do.

I envy you. It’s a symbol of English life that I never got to see – although I did buy a clothespin Elizabeth I doll from a tiny craft fair in a tiny town once. (Wonder whatever happened to her?)
Pig-racing is far more dangerous. Independent-minded chaps, pigs.
Yet more proof that the English are far more sophisticated than us Yanks…
