Plaques like these are all over the city. Apparently they were like little ads alerting passersby to what business the business inside was in. Or perhaps just a proud proclamation of such. A few more:

I wonder whether it might have been a sign of guild affiliation (“the brewers’ guild built these houses”). Don’t know the area at all.
