starting to pare down…

You’ll notice that the new-in-cinemas and new-on-dvd pages have gone away. You’ll find a listing of what’s new this week only on the newly pared down homepage. The straight-to-VOD page is also gone.

I’m sorry if you found any of those pages useful, but there simply hasn’t been anywhere near enough support from readers that would allow me to continue doing all the work they required to keep to them updated. All that info is available elsewhere online — clearly, there was no point in my replicating it here.

I don’t stream films and I don’t live in the US or UK, so some of those services were of little use to me personally. I mostly drop by here – and donate! – to savour your idiosyncratic reviews and to occasionally join the debate in the comments. It would be great if you could keep those reviews coming at least. I think you’ve done a heroic job with your long-running one-woman operation. Too bad it’s so hard these days to make such a worthwhile enterprise economically feasible. Two thumbs up and please come back to the Netherlands if you need cheering up!

Most of my readers are in the US and the UK, and plenty of people are visiting those streaming pages, so there could be more people paying to support them.

Reviews are not going away. Basically, what *is* going away is the stuff that’s not about my opinion.

I appreciate the support I *am* getting from subscribers, and I hope not too many of them will be disappointed with what I have to cut back on.

I’m with Jan Willem — what I enjoy the most is your writing and opinions, and the interaction with others on the comments. You’ve done an incredible job of keeping this up for a long time. I hope others will join in and support your good work!

MaryAnn: I didn’t subscribe to the site because I agree with everything you say. I haven’t been to the cinema in years and couldn’t care less about when the new DVD’s are coming out.

I subscribed because I enjoy what you write, even when I strongly disagree with what you say. You are a voice that needs to be heard: one that the industry cannot continue to ignore. What you do here is important.

Those of us who have chosen to subscribe really don’t care about the extras: trust me. I’m a working creative myself, have very little spare money every month and had to scramble when I decided to finally subscribe: but I have no regrets. You need to stay “on the air.”
