I rewatched the 1990 ‘Flatliners’…

…and I livetweeted it. In preparation for seeing the new, not-screened-for-critics reboot/sequel/whatever-it-is tomorrow.

Bless you and keep you in your tribulation, sister. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of generic corporate extruded movie product, I will fear no remake…

Although I didn’t see the 1990 Flatliners, I remember buzz before and particularly after it in a way that just doesn’t happen with films now. The film that people are still talking about two weeks after it opens is vanishingly rare. There’s a little artificial peak of interest when DVD/streaming access goes live, but that’s it.

I quite liked Dreamscape. It’s very cheesy in places, but it does at least have a sense of fun rather than being deadly serious all the time.

For thou art with me, thy snark and thy livetweets they comfort me.

I have fond childhood memories of Dreamscape. It was a genre film on heavy rotation on some of the premium cable channels (either HBO or The Movie Channel, since those were the two I had), so I’ve seen it probably a dozen times.

reboot/sequel/whatever-it-is tomorrow

The rise of “reboot” has kind of muddied the terminology. Whatever happened to just “remake”? Also, since 2017’s”Flatliners” features a character from 1990’s “Flatliners” – played by the same actor, no less – then that’s unambiguously a sequel. Right? (But then, the lack of any number or subtitle is bound to create unnecessary confusion, so why do that?)

Sutherland plays a different character in the new film. There’s no connection between the old movie and the new one.

Well, then. +1 to the PR people, cause I’m sure I read in several places that Sutherland’s character was the only one returning from the original film.

He’s the only *actor* returning. :-)
