the beautiful 2021 British film ‘Nowhere Special’ finally gets a US theatrical release

Nowhere Special

It got a bit lost early in our ongoing pandemic, but the beautiful British-Italian-Romanian coproduction Nowhere Special — which had a UK theatrical release in 2021 — is finally getting a very well-deserved US cinema run. It’s the beguiling and heartbreaking story of a terminally ill single father (James Norton) in Northern Ireland seeking a new home for his very young son (adorable newcomer Daniel Lamont) before he dies. It was one of the best movies I saw in 2021, and I’m astonished that it has taken this long for the film to cross the the Atlantic. It’s now in a handful of cinemas in New York and Los Angeles and will expand to other US regions throughout the spring. The film’s official site has more details about upcoming dates and cities, and you can read my 2021 review here.

It’s rare that there’s this wide a gap between US and UK releases, but if you want to keep up with my takes on movies in this sort of situation, please sign up for either my Substack and my Patreon: I sent an email with my review via both services last week, even though it was not, strictly speaking, a new review. Of course I would love for you to become a paid subscriber on either service, but I offer free versions on both, which give you an email heads-up of new reviews… or, in cases like this, old reviews that are suddenly newsworthy again.
