Mama (trailer)

Starring Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain! And also Nordic god Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. So I’m there. But a “horror” flick rated PG-13? Generally not a good sign. Though it’s a 15 in the U.K., so perhaps we’ll get a scarier cut here. Or perhaps the MPAA went too easy on it.

the PG-13 means there’s no serious gore, so it’s probably going for shocks than revulsion.  Also no nudity.  And only one use of the F-word (seriously, just say it once.  If you say f-ck twice in a movie you get bumped up to a R, I sh-t you not).

It’s possible to sneak in more than one (Benjamin Button and Lincoln both have two apiece).  Apparently some other movies have done the same: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/18/f-word-pg-13-movies_n_930165.html.  Still a ridiculous rule, of course.

Well Lincoln producers probably had to give up their planned sex scene between Gideon Welles and Union spy Pauline Cushman.  So that was the trade-off…

You can say it more than once as long as you don’t use it as a verb (“Fuckin’ A!” OK, “they’re fucking in the other room” not OK) and you pay off the MPAA people.

Yeah, interesting cast, and I saw Guillermo del Toro’s name in there. But the trailer just looks so very lame. Not scary, not puzzling, not…anything, except shaky cam frenzy.  All I could think was “Blair Witch, the Next Generation” – and not in a good way.

And then I saw the trailer for Hansel & Gretel and the one for Mama looked like Lear. It certainly is January, isn’t it?

It might just be that the BBFC agreed 13 was a workable minimum age, and rounded up to 15 because there’s no 13 certificate.

But – OK, I’m not a horror fan. What I look for in a horror film is much like what I look for in any film: interesting and well-written characters and a plot that makes sense, and ideally something reasonably original to say. I realise this isn’t what all horror fans are necessarily looking for. But this trailer doesn’t seem to offer any of those things.
