Scottish Borders photo of the day: Smailholm Tower

It’s a place that inspired Sir Walter Scott when he was a boy (he spent time on a farm nearby). It sounds like something out of Tolkien, and it looks like the last lonely outpost on Mars.

I’ll tell you what it is, though. It is the last place you should go on a day just warm enough for the snow to be melting into mud in no sturdier shoes than old Converse. They dae nae believe in footpaths and guardrails in Scotland.
