Doctor Who thing: the passion and longing of fan art

If you haven’t yet made it to the National Media Museum in Bradford, Yorkshire, for its exhibit “Doctor Who and Me: 50 Years of Doctor Who Fans” (which I’ve mentioned before), you’ve got only two more weeks: the exhibit closes on February 9th.

I was at the opening night of the exhibit back in November, and I figure it’s time to share some thoughts and images from the exhibit. So I’m doing that all this week.

Today: fan art. For me, these works represent a desire to get closer to the Doctor and share his adventures that infects fans of all ages, from professional artists to dabblers. There’s a lot of passion in these pieces, and a lot of longing.

I quite like this one:

This portrait was created from bits of rolled-up newspaper:

Art for a Christmas card:

An abstract inspired by 1970s-era opening credits:

I love this! A story told in a series of manipulated photos:

Charming:

One artist has painted portraits of all the Doctors:

Including Peter Capaldi, who can only just have been announced as taking over the role when this was painted:

Those of us who sent material in for the exhibit were putting stuff in the mail in late August, and Capaldi’s casting was revealed less than a month earlier. I love how the fans embrace a new Doctor before we have any idea what he’s going to be like.

There’s something really wonderful about this one:

I was not able to get artist information for these pieces; if you know who created them, please drop a comment or send me an email, and I’ll update the post.

(If you stumble across a cool Doctor Who thing, feel free to email me with a link.)

Darn, I missed it completely! Whatever else is wrong in life one can take consolation from the fact that we live in a world where someone can decide to build a 35 foot Wicker Dalek. :D

There’s clearly a lot of creative energy in the world that isn’t being utilized in other ways.
