the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘Ultimate Sci-Fi Collection’

You’ll love what someone considers as constituting the “ultimate” collection of science fiction movies:

Escape From New York, Mad Max, Rollerball (the original, I’m assuming), The Abyss, Alien, Aliens, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Fantastic Voyage, The Fly (not sure which one), Independence Day, Journey to Center of the Earth, The Neptune Factor, Planet of the Apes, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

And that’s it. Regardless of what you might think of any of these movies individually, for good or ill, we now know that together, they comprise the only science fiction flicks you ever need to see.

Twenty discs of definitive sciffy. Our overlords have spoken.

That’s supposed to be “Syfy,” innit? “Lite” Sci-Fi for the mainstream folk?

ahhh…a good question of the day would be ‘what 10 or 15 movies belong in the ultimate scifi collection?’

Hey! Where’s Serenity? Independence Day should not be included in any respectable collection of the “best” Sci-Fi.

I’d mention Star Trek and Star Wars being missing, but I guess they’re considered famous enough not to be Sci-Fi…or something like that.

I almost feel as if this needs a subtitle:
“Ultimate Sci-Fi Collection: That we could afford to package together.”

Films this collection could have afforded to include but didn’t for whatever reason:
* Forbidden Planet
* Disney’s The Black Hole
* Frankenstein
* From the Earth to the Moon
* Robinson Caruso on Mars
* The Island of Dr. Moreau
* The Incredible Shrinking Man
* The Twilight Zone (movie)

I think Ultimate falls well short of the mark if these classics are excluded.

I take it was too expensive to get 2001, Star Wars IV V and VI (the prequels never happened), Wrath of Khan, both the 1951 and 1982 versions of The Thing, They Live, Quartermass and the Pit, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Naussica, Ghost in the Shell, and Plan 9 From Outer Space. Tsk.
