This is the representation-of-women problem in miniature: it’s not that the idea of a father who can’t cope with his daughter as an independent and sexual being is a bad one per se, it’s that it is the default filmic depiction of a father with a daughter to the exclusion of almost all other approaches, and has been so overused that it passed beyond “tired old cliché” ages ago and now lives in the land of ideas that only Hollywood screenwriters aren’t ashamed to use.
