trailer break: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Hoorah! A woman pirate who actually gets to do piratey things, and is played by Penelope Cruz? Awesome!

Now, we’ll just have to hope that director Rob Marshall doesn’t turn her into some sort of cardboard Barbie doll who stands around in the background looking pretty and propping up the male characters, as he did in Nine. Even when the story is supposed to be about women, as he did in Memoirs of a Geisha.

On the other hand, Marshall’s movies typically end up like cartoons even when they’re supposed to be serious dramas. Perhaps when he’s starting with a story that’s meant to be a cartoon, like this one, it’ll all work out okay.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in the U.K. on May 18, 2011, and in the U.S. and Canada on May 20, 2011.
