trailer break: ‘Gulliver’s Travels’

I can’t wait to see how the film applies Swiftian satire on government, corruption, and religious tribalism to the modern 21st-century world. I’m sure that bit with Jack Black’s flabby belly repelling cannonballs will offer an incisive undercutting of our penchant for war on the flimsiest of pretenses. Surely the use of the iPhone as an instrument of communication — or lack thereof — will bring a brilliant new level of cultural commentary to a classic tale.

Oh, just give the film Oscars all around now.

Gulliver’s Travels opens in the U.S. and Canada on December 22, and in the U.K. on December 26.
