question of the day: What is the unlikeliest pop-culture influence from childhood on your mindset today?

Fri, Aug 31, 2012
no comments yet

I suddenly realized recently that Scooby-Doo contributed to my skeptical mindset, by always unmasking its spooks and specters as something having a rational, grounded explanation…

question of the day: Is TV better than film these days?

If you think so, do you see this changing anytime soon?

question of the day: Who are the unlikeliest action heroes ever?

Wed, Aug 29, 2012
no comments yet

I’m gonna go with Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings. Wood doesn’t spring to mind when thinking about action heroes, and even within the context of the story, a homebody hobbit is the last person anyone expects to be an action hero.

question of the day: Why have the works of Isaac Asimov had such a singularly bad record of getting turned into movies?

Tue, Aug 28, 2012
no comments yet

I’d venture to guess that Asimov’s name is synonymous with science fiction even among the general public who don’t read. It seems like a no-brainer for Hollywood to glom on to Asimov’s reputation to pre-sell films. So why hasn’t it?

Which robots that have most impacted entertainment, as well as our ideas about what robots can and should do?

question of the weekend: Do you like to drive?

Sat, Aug 25, 2012

If I have to drive, it’s a pain in the ass. I would hate to have to drive to commute to a job, for instance. And driving in big cities is pointless and exhausting. But an open country road? Bring it on.

question of the day: Do you turn on the TV out of habit, hoping to find something to watch, or only when you know there’s something you don’t want to miss?

Fri, Aug 24, 2012

Or maybe it’s something in the middle? When I want company, for instance, I’ll leave an all-news channel on… at least till it starts annoying the hell outta me.

question of the day: Why does British TV (and film) seem so much more comfortable depicting interracial couples than American TV?

Thu, Aug 23, 2012

I’ve seen far more mixed-race couples with their mixed-race children in London than I ever saw in New York, and that is absolutely reflected on British TV…

question of the day: Are Pixar movies released too close together for each of them to get classic status?

Wed, Aug 22, 2012

Is Pixar working too fast? Is its talent stretched too thin? Or is Pixar doing just fine?

question of the day: What is the best way to honor the life and work of a filmmaker who dies too soon?

Tue, Aug 21, 2012
no comments yet

Does an untimely death change our perspective on the work? (Should it?) Should how a filmmaker’s work was received during his or her life change how we honor them after they die?
