questions

question of the day: Will you watch the Olympics opening ceremony?

Fri, Jul 27, 2012
no comments yet

If so, what do you expect to see? Will you watch out of genuine interest, or in a roadside-accident-rubbernecking sort of way? (I confess that this is mostly my motivation for watching.)

question of the day: Why are we debating the violence that fills movies when we should be debating their despair?

Thu, Jul 26, 2012
no comments yet

I am not suggesting that we should ban or censor movies full of despair! I’m suggesting that these despairing movies are doing too good a job of reflecting our society, and it’s our society we should be concerned with, not the messengers who deliver this news.

question of the day: What films offer the best life lessons to little kids?

And what lessons do your choices teach?

question of the day: What visual motif or imagery must you always look away from onscreen?

Tue, Jul 24, 2012

Blood? Corpses? Bugs? Bones? Guts? Guns? Maybe it’s something other people don’t find particularly disgusting or unwatchable…

question of the day: Would it be a good idea for Christian Bale to visit young Aurora shooting victims dressed as Batman?

Mon, Jul 23, 2012
no comments yet

I’m not sure I can think of a worse idea than this. I can well imagine being retraumatized by seeing a big guy in black body armor and a mask coming at you, no matter who is wearing it…

question of the weekend: What’s the trashiest book you’ve ever read?

Feel free to define trashy however you want.

question of the day: Paramilitary gunman massacres moviegoers watching The Dark Knight Rises: WTF?

Fri, Jul 20, 2012
no comments yet

My head is churning as much as my stomach right now. I can’t really think coherently about this. I’m just angry.

question of the day: What phrases or expressions do you wish critics — including me! — did not use in our reviews?

Thu, Jul 19, 2012
no comments yet

No one presumes that film critics are above criticism ourselves, and I’m sure there are things that critics do that bug even our biggest fans. So here’s your chance to sound off…

question of the day: Is Hollywood afraid of fanboys?

Wed, Jul 18, 2012

I don’t think we need to worry that Hollywood will stop pandering to fanboys, but how might its approach change when it fears their wrath?

question of the day: How do we tame the excesses of fanboy culture?

Tue, Jul 17, 2012
no comments yet

Fans have gone batshit over negative reviews of The Dark Knight Rises, and way worse than ever before. These people appear to have no shame, so I doubt we can shame them into behaving better. So what do we do?
