my week at the movies: ‘Ink,’ ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper,’ ‘500 Days of Summer’

Still sorta a slow week. I should cherish this, especially with all the non-movie-related crap that is filling my head, unwanted, at the moment. But I don’t. I’d rather I had nothing at all to do but think about movies (and TV: Torchwood: Children of Earth is calling...)

I’m most intrigued this week by Ink, which is not getting a traditional release but is being self-distributed by its makers, who emailed me today to invite me to a screening in Greenwich Village on Thursday night. Apparently the film was something of an indie hit in Colorado and Los Angeles, and now the filmmakers are looking for a run in NYC. I’ll let you know if it’s worth it...

I Love You, Beth Cooper (opens in the U.S. on July 10, and in the U.K. on August 21) wasn’t originally going to screen for critics, but 20th Century Fox changed its mind, and now it will screen. Based on what I’ve seen so far, it doesn’t look like a triumph for either star Hayden Panettiere -- who is only going to be able to coast on her Heroes fame for long -- or director Chris Columbus, who must be feeling something of a burn from the Harry Potter movies at his back that he didn’t helm.

I don’t know much about 500 Days of Summer (opens in the U.S. on July 17, and in the U.K. on September 4), except that it’s an indie romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. And all I know about them is that they’re two of the most interesting young actors working today, so I’ve got my fingers crossed tight for this one.
