trailer break: ‘Astro Boy’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer…

Looks like a little bit Iron Giant, a little bit Transformers, a little bit Robocop.

The real question is, however: Is it a little bit Pinocchio? Does Astro long to be a real boy?

This is from David Bowers, who cowrote and codirected the wonderfully original Flushed Away, so maybe it won’t be as tedious as it looks…

Astro Boy opens in the U.S. on October 23, and in the U.K. on January 29, 2010.

Astro Boy is the original great Japanese manga, written/drawn in the 1950s. I wonder how it will translate to modern cinema.

I’m a little wary of this one…it’s old-school Japanese, seemingly Americanized. Could really suck. I’m on “wait and see” mode.

PS the trailer I saw said that, yes, he “longed to be a real boy”. Sigh.

All I know is that this preview amused my usually timid 9-year-old son greatly and frightened my usually stout-hearted 6-year-old daughter in equal measure (she’s had nightmares ever since we saw it before Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). Go figure.
