U.K. box office: ‘Avatar’ clings to No. 1

Just a quick look at last weekend’s numbers as we move into a new go-round:

1. Avatar: £2.3 million
2. The Lovely Bones: £1.203 million (2nd week; drops 27%)
3. The Crazies: £1.194 million (NEW)
4. The Princess and the Frog: £.87 million (4th week in wide release; drops 50%)
5. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief: £.85 million (3rd week; drops 43%)

(actual numbers, not estimates)
Will Avatar be able to hold onto its top spot with the 3D Alice in Wonderland opening today? There are far fewer 3D screens in the U.K. than there are in North America, so it’ll be a real fight between the two… especially with theaters resisting Alice to start with, thanks to a dispute with Disney over shortening the window of exclusivity the big screens have before the DVD release.

A whole bunch of new releases tanked last weekend: Leap Year debuted at No. 7 with £.73 million; From Paris with Love at No. 8 with £.68 million; Extraordinary Measures at No. 17 with £.13 milion; and Everybody’s Fine at No. 21 with £.069 million.

Overall, the box office was down only three percent over the same weekend last year, though it was down 24 percent over the previous weekend. Perhaps everyone would rather revisit Avatar — which was down only 20 percent over the previous weekend — than check out something new.
