trailer break: ‘Ramona and Beezus’

Underpants joke. But no fart joke. That’s a net positive, I think.

I remember enjoying Beverly Cleary’s Ramona books when I was a kid. But I do remember them mostly being about Ramona, not about her older teenage pop star sister. That must have come after I moved on from third grade…

Ramona and Beezus opens in the U.S. and Canada on July 23, and in the U.K. on October 22.

They’re making a Ramona movie? I really liked those books as a kid, too. I introduced them to my son, and he has a read a few as well. I don’t remember much, but I do know that they were mostly focused on Ramona. We’ll see. Looks as cheesy as one would expect.

I do *so* hope it will live up to the love I had for all those stories. It looks like not only great fun but something actually positive and (dare I say it?) wholesome for girls. Here’s hoping!

I hope the movie captures the imagination that kids can have. My daughter has an awesome imagination – I’ll be taking her to see this as long as it doesn’t resort to crude humor.

Make that long before you attended third grade and you’d be correct. Henry Higgens begat Beezus begat Ramona.

Also, this one would have been entertained by a Superfudge / Ramona inter-author crossover.

i think there was a canadian series based on the Ramona books back in the mid/late 80s. it was quite charming. there was also a “Fudge” series and the kids who played Fudge and Peter were just great.

  • The books were originally about Henry Higgins, who had to cope with his friend’s little annoying sister Ramona. But Ramona got popular in her own right and got a series dedicated to her, focusing instead on the sibling rivalry between Ramona and Beezus (the first one titled as the movie was originally focused on Beezus, but Ramona stole the show).

Henry Higgens begat Beezus begat Ramona.

Oy! Make thet ‘enry ‘uggins, as I looked it up after I come, I did.

I remember the Ramona books well. I miss the days of children’s literature before Harry fucking Potter came along. [/23 year-old]

  • Hey, you have a better memory than me, JoshDM. I remember the “Henry and Ramona” books too but for some reason, I have better memories of the “Henry” books than the “Ramona” books.

The only things I remember from the latter were Ramona’s mocking how her older sister looked in her gym outfit and Ramona’s odd friendship with the local Civil War veteran. (Civil War veteran? Wow! These books really were written a long time ago. Can anyone imagine anyone reading Harry Potter books in the year 2100?)

Oh, you misunderstand. I heard about this trailer a few weeks ago and did a Wikipedia search b/c I couldn’t remember if it was Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary and whether Ramona was a spin from Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (no, that was the start of the Superfudge line), or from “that other book that I couldn’t remember but it starred a boy” (Henry Huggins).

Wikipedia has the best memory as long as it’s not false info.

  • JoshDM

nd Ramona’s odd friendship with the local Civil War veteran. (Civil War veteran? Wow! These books really were written a long time ago … )

According to said Wikipedia, the books are all related to each other, but the time setting is based on the year/era Beverly Cleary wrote the book. They are intended to be ageless.

Incredible. I thought these memories were mine alone.
Yup-read them Henry Huggins books.I remember being taken
    w/ the B&W illustrations (Louis Darling).Kids need
this stuff. How much can “we” keep terrorizing them
with the terrors of the universe? I hope it goes over,
and a spike in sales of Cleary books happens.
