question of the day: Has 2011 been the best year for science fiction films ever?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I must confess that the notion didn’t even cross my mind till Scott Weinberg put forth the suggestion at Movies.com:

Since April of the year I’ve been commenting that it’s been a damn good year for science fiction films, but since my cat really doesn’t care, I thought it best to put my thoughts into an article. Check these titles and tell if I’m not insane. Or if I am.

Weinberg’s list includes such flicks as:

The Adjustment Bureau
Battle: Los Angeles
Paul
Priest
X-Men: First Class
Attack the Block
Captain America: The First Avenger
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
which I include here because I do indeed think these very fine films.

But his list also includes a lot of stinkers… and I don’t think a year should be called “great for sci-fi” if the large number of sci-fi movies includes so many bad ones. (You can see Weinberg’s list and my own ranking of 2011 films for more.)

What do you think? Has 2011 been the best year for science fiction films ever? If not this year, does another year stand out for you?
