Looks like yet one more tedious haunted-house movie. But we’re meant to find something fresh in two of its gimmicks. No, not its “inspired by true events” gimmick — all haunted-house movies seem to be “inspired by true events,” and that never makes them any more interesting or scary. Nope, it’s the fact that this is presented as one long uncut take, with events happening in real time. The other is the presence of Elizabeth Olsen, following up on the undeniable triumph of Martha Marcy May Marlene.
Will these distinguish the film from the slew of others like it? We’ll see…
