It has the whiff of Oscar bait about it, and yet here it is being dumped into March with a small release (and no international release dates planned, except for Japan this summer). Not good signs…

Take out Tommy Lee Jones playing Tommy Lee Jones playing MacArthur, and a lot of the Oscar-baitiness goes away. I wonder how much of the actual film he’s in?
I saw this last week and it wasn’t too shabby. RogerBW is right about it being Tommy Lee Jones playing Tommy Lee Jones playing MacArthur–but it works. He’s not the central protagonist and he’s only in the movie sporadically. But, this has a compelling narrative as historical dramas go. “How responsible was Hirohito for Japan’s involvement in WWII?” In short, it was entertaining and I never looked at my watch once–which is a high review from me. It’s not going to win any awards, but it’s worth at least a single watch.
