Weinstein Co moves Populaire’s North American release to September

Populaire Deborah Francois

It was supposed to open in limited release in the U.S. and Canada on May 17. But I’m guessing that the mostly rapturous reviews coming out of the U.K. — including my own, which is here — or maybe just early response they got from U.S. press screenings indicated to them that they have a potential Oscar contender on their hands.

Which they probably do. Populaire is sure to be a big hit, as arthouse flicks go: it’s cute and bubbly, it’s got a Mad Men-esque retro vibe to hook onto in promoting it, and apart from the fact that it’s subtitled, it’s not very “foreign.”

I’m looking forward to seeing how obnoxious Harvey gets with his Oscar push come autumn…
