Maleficent trailer: another baroque CGI fairy-tale orgy?

The tone is different, but the only vibe I’m getting here is one reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and Jack the Giant Slayer, which probably isn’t surprising, since this is clearly the thing we’re doing with big-budget fairy-tale reboots these days. This one? The budget is reportedly $200 million. Very few films warrant such an expense. This is going to be another baroque CGI orgy. Which doesn’t make me hopeful.

Angelina Jolie looks and sounds the part, at least…

Yeah, I can get graphics like that and interactivity if I play a computer game. Why should I bother with this?

(So maybe the trailer is aimed at people who play computer games but want more of the same?)

I think that’s definitely Disney’s target audience; doesn’t mean they’ll hit that target.

I don’t think these people understand that we play games *despite* the rampant cliches, horrible writing and cheesy visuals, not *because* of them…

The 1959 Sleeping Beauty was much more visually compelling with a very simple, stylized approach. This looks a bit too much like every other overcrowded CG fantasy world, I’m afraid.
