The Wind Rises trailer: farewell Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki’s final film looks lovely. Which is hardly a surprise.

I’m gonna predict this right now, however: This film is about the man who designed the fighter planes that Japan used in World War II. I’m afraid we’re not so far from that war that some right-wing gasbag in the U.S. — quite possibly Rush Limbaugh — won’t grab this as a chance to “indict” “liberal” Hollywood as anti-American. (The movie is being distributed by Disney.) A lovely film that pinko — probably homosexual — critics are praising to high heaven? (And wait till it gets an Oscar nomination for best animated film!) And it’s about the guy who made Pearl Harbor possible? Catnip to those idiots.

As always, I’d be happy to be wrong about that.

UPDATE: Apparently some people in Japan are unhappy with the film.

I suspect the gasbags still regard anything animated as suitable only for children, and therefore beneath their consideration as long as it doesn’t have sex or violence.

That’s what’ll guarantee this being accused of ‘brainwashing children’.
