No joke: badass action hero Jason Statham’s best onscreen partners, the costars he has the most, and most charming, chemistry with, have been tough, smart little girls. There’s more than one example of this!
The first was newcomer Catherine Chan in the ferocious 2012 crime thriller Safe, in which she plays a math whiz holding a very long number in her head that’s very special to her “uncle,” a Chinese gang boss in New York. Stath teams up with her to protect her from “uncle” as well Russian mobsters and corrupt NYPD officers: all the city’s bad guys are after that very valuable number.
Around this delightful duo, writer-director Boaz Yakin crafts a viciously cynical dark fantasy that fashions a new mythos of post-9/11 New York. It’s noirishly bleak and all too plausible.
