We talked recently about how the return of Arrested Development as 14 episodes released all at once via Netflix this coming May could be the future of “television.” But we may not have to wait that long to see how this method sits with viewers. Because Netflix is releasing all 13 episodes of its new series House of Cards this Friday.
Obviously there isn’t a rabid fandom for this story, but it is a remake of the 1990 British miniseries of the same name (which was in turn based on a novel), so there’s some name recognition. And that’s on top of the star power: Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright? Yeah, I’m gonna try to find time to watch this. It looks pretty juicy!
UPDATE: Turns out this is debuting on U.K. Netflix on Friday, too. Which I only discovered because I saw an ad on a bus shelter this afternoon.

Juicy?
You may think that, but I couldn’t possibly comment.
(The fandom may not be “rabid”, but it’s there all right.)
Juicy in a political-wonky sense.
You have to remember than I’m a dork.
I was making a House of Cards fan comment. “You may think that, but I couldn’t possibly comment” was Francis Urquhart’s (ie Frank Underwood’s) leak catchphrase: code for confirming that something was true while maintaining deniability.
Ah.
I’m not yet a House of Cards dork, or I guess I would have known that. :->
It won’t take you very long, I’m sure. Kevin Spacey isn’t Ian Richardson, but he most certainly is Kevin Spacey.
I guess they won’t be doing the sequel about the new King’s intervention in politics…
in general, i’m against US remakes of very british movies or programmes … but i have to say, i do have a certain excitement for this version of House of Cards, which was one of the most brilliant, bone-chilling and gripping series of the 90s. and forever cemeted ian richardson in my boyfriend pantheon.
should be “cemented” of course.
oh, and i just remembered… i don’t have Netflix… oye.
Oh, this is good stuff, and it’s made me get a (UK) Netflix subscription even though I’ve resisted up to now! I loved the original HoC, and the book, but this is a great remake/reimagining. Who needs a fourth wall when it’s Kevin Spacey delivering to-camera snark?
