Just as the pointless remake of Evil Dead signals a total lack of interest on the part of moviegoers in anything original via its very good North American debut comes the next old thing.
Can there be any good creative reason to remake Brian De Palma’s 1976 film? Maybe director Kimberly Peirce has found a reason. We might expect the director of the distressing and questioning Boys Don’t Cry and Stop-Loss to find such a reason. But if Hollywood were truly interested in Peirce’s subversion, it wouldn’t have been five years since her last film… which was nine years after her first one.

I think it’s interesting that the trailer gives away the entire plot and it doesn’t spoil the movie. I’ve never seen the Brian De Palma film all the way through, or read the novel, but I still know the iconic moments: The bucket of blood. The hand reaching up from the grave. I’ll be curious to find out whether the movie works as a film or just as a collection of “greatest hits.”
There was only one movie that deserved a remake, and that was Plan 9 From Outer Space. AND THEY STILL F-CKED IT UP. /headdesk
We’re gonna be seeing a remake of Skyfall any day now. Or a remake of the Croods, only this time live-action! Or a remake of the remake of the Croods, just to show how bankrupt Hollywood has really become with decent story ideas.
When they remade Brewsters Millions over and over, they at least had the decency of providing… well actually there was no decency at all. At least when they remade Here Comes Mr. Jordan, they at least had… no, not really that either… Sigh.
I actually liked the remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan, aka Heaven Can Wait….For what that’s worth. No comment on the various versions of Brewster’s Millions.
Chloe Grace Moretz was getting a reputation for being in quirky interesting films. SHE MUST BE STOPPED. (See also Carey Mulligan.)
Carey Mulligan’s most recent films were directed by the Coen brothers and Baz Luhrmann. She hasn’t exactly sold out to The Man.
And since Carrie was directed by Kimberly Peirce, there’s a chance that it will be quirky and interesting, although I’m not holding my breath.
I’m thinking of the way Mulligan showed up in a couple of interesting “breakout” roles, then suddenly shifted to tedious rubbish as though she’d been required to pay dues for the earlier ones. She’s no longer being talked about (at least in circles I read) as the Next Big Thing, or the star who can actually guarantee to make a film at least partly watchable.
I hope this changes, as you suggest…
The simple answer is “no.”
This looks like a (mostly) shot-by-shot remake of the original.
Does anyone remember the shot-by-shot remake of PSYCHO?
(To be fair, they added ONE new shot: Norman masturbating … [Master Bates?])
