Doctor Who thing: let’s light up the Empire State Building in TARDIS blue on Nov 23rd!

esbblue

The social group New York SciFi & Fantasy has submitted paperwork to the Empire State Building in Manhattan officially requesting that the building be lit up in TARDIS blue on November 23rd, to commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary. (Info on how that process works at The Official Site of the Empire State Building.)

In support of their application, New York SciFi & Fantasy is asking fans to sign a petition at Change.org to show the ESB organization that there is worldwide interest in Doctor Who and in lighting the building in its honor. As they note at the Change.org page:

“The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common – they don’t alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.” ~The Doctor

Let’s alter the Manhattan skyline. Allons-y!

Go on: sign the petition!

My brilliant brother Ken, who sometimes posts comments here as Geeks Are My Peeps, had the idea to do this, completely independently of New York SciFi & Fantasy, and emailed me about it last week. We got a bit flummoxed by the process, however, because the ESB apparently requires that organizations, not individuals, make any application for the lighting rights. I’m glad to see that someone else had the idea and was able to run with it.

UPDATE 11.13.11: The campaign has failed.

That’s kind of a strange quote to use, considering it’s not very flattering to people who want to alter reality to fit their wishes…

Fortunately, no people will be altered if this comes to pass. :->

Done! i’ve signed a lot of petitions on Change.org — never thought there’d be one for a fun topic!
