trailer break: ‘Bruno’ redband trailer (NSFW)

Take a break from work: watch a trailer…

Oo, that “man with two dildos” bit is so an homage to Monty Python and their man-with-a-pointed-stick sketch.

Does Sacha Baron Cohen go too far? Maybe. But he goes too far in the right direction, and I applaud him for that. He’s one of the very few people these days pushing boundaries to make a point, to criticize the culture and highlight the hypocrisy and small-mindedness that is throttling us.

I think he’s brilliant and subversive and dangerous in exactly the way we need more of, and I cannot wait to see this film.

I hope something he sends up is the idea that even in a redband trailer for (supposedly) mature audiences, a woman’s nipples must be pixelated while a man’s needn’t be.

I’m gonna reiterate something I wrote about recently: Every single instance of this trailer that I found at YouTube had the “embedding disabled by request” feature turned on, which means I couldn’t embed a YouTube video here. Frankly, I’m surprised that I found one elsewhere that I could embed.

Perhaps Universal has some exclusive deal with Spike to run this trailer. But the only way that makes sense is if Spike is paying Universal for exclusive rights to run the trailer… but that makes about as much sense as ABC paying Coca-Cola for the exclusive rights to run soda ads! I cannot possibly conceive of Universal paying Spike for the exclusive right to run an ad, when by letting the trailer run free on the Net and letting anyone who wants to embed it at their blog, Universal would garner tons more free advertising.

My head wants to explode. It really does.

Bruno opens in the U.S. and the U.K. on July 10.
