Yesterday the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday named actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway as the hosts of the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards ceremony, to be held on February 27, 2011. From the AMPAS press release:
Both have previously appeared on the telecast but not in hosting capacities.
“James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27,” said [Oscar telecast producers Bruce] Cohen and [Don] Mischer. “We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that.”

Given that the Oscar telecast usually feels like it lasts about 127 hours, and that watching it sometimes induces the feeling that you would rather gnaw off an arm than sit through till the end, Franco is imminently well qualified.
Frankly, I always feel like people are doing the Oscars wrong if it feels 127 hours long — you’re supposed to be drinking and snarking your way through it, not paying respectful attention through the whole thing. Still: that’s funny.
