curated cinema: two great movies by Rob Reiner
Watch 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap and 1987’s The Princess Bride and be reminded why Reiner was a gentle genius.

A high-fantasy action comedy of tedious slapstick and obvious punchlines you scry the instant a wannabe medieval wag opens their mouth. It’s all borderline incoherent, sketched in cheap-looking CGI.

I imagine that a movie pub would mostly show classics, ones that people know by heart. This would not be a venue for quiet appreciation of a new movie but more of a communal bonding type of experience.

In honor of the great showing Irish talent and Irish stories made at this past weekend’s Oscars, and of Saint Patrick’s Day coming up on Friday…

I’ve illustrated this post with an image of Miss Piggy in a wedding dress purely for aesthetic purposes: I think Buttercup, as the straight woman of the story, should probably be the one character played by a human.

Mine is, of course, The Princess Bride. It’s sweet, goofy, funny, and endlessly entertaining, no matter how many times I watch it.

Wonderfully escapist, dripping with magnificently congenial charm thanks to the comic chemistry of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Plus it’s sure to enrage people who use “woke” as an insult. Yay!
Hilarious!

It’s a prequel and a sequel! It’s got girl powerrr and lady-hating! It’s a mashup of Lord of the Rings and Frozen! It’s all these things, and less.
