trailer break: ‘An Education’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer…

Ah, a movie about a young woman’s coming of age. How wonderful… and how rare.

And yes, that’s Carey Mulligan — aka “Sally Sparrow” from the Doctor Who episode “Blink” — in the lead role. And she’s as fantastic here as she was there. I don’t generally like to talk too much about Oscar buzz, especially so early in the season when lots of contenders have yet to be seen, but the enthusiasm that I’m hearing for her among the critical community in NYC, at least, is notable.

An Education opens in the U.S. on October 9, and in the U.K. on October 30.

I saw “Emma Thompson” and immediately thought “wow, I had no idea Hermione got so old; that’s a great makeup job.”

No, JoshDM. Emma “Watson”.

Carey Mulligan’s character Jenny seems to have some of the same qualities as Sally Sparrow (independent, confident, and centered in the middle of chaotic circumstances) so that I almost feel that the film is a “conterfactual history” of Sally Sparrow. What if the Weeping Angels had got Sally? We saw a fragment of what happened to Kathy Nightingale when she was abandoned in the past; now it’s Sally’s turn to make the best of her life.

That’s trailers for you – just enough information to let you build your own film in your head.
