retro trailer: ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’

Take a look back at an old trailer…

Happy Zombie Jesus Day! For your enjoyment, enjoy Charlton Heston as Caveman John the Baptist, Telly Savalas as Pontius Pilate, John Wayne as a Roman centurion, and Max von Sydow as Ralph Fiennes as Jesus.

It’s got the Good Housekeeping seal of approval!

(Seriously? Good Housekeeping used to run movie reviews? And people are wondering about the death of film criticism today?)

Do you think they intended for Judas Iscariot to be so hot? They had to know that was gonna happen when they cast Illya Kuryakin in the role, right? Then again, the villain is always the hottest guy…

The Greatest Story Ever Told is available on DVD in Region 1 from Amazon.com and from Amazon.ca and in Region 2 from Amazon U.K.

Much of this was filmed in Northern Arizona, and what a hullaballoo there was about it! Even our pretty much picturesque Indians-and-cactus monthly magazine, “Arizona Highways,” had a big article about it. (No, they didn’t do the same thing for “Planet of the Apes.”)
Heh. The prediction that TGSET would run for 40 years apparently lasted about as long as “Look” magazine…

OTOH, wouldn’t it be GREAT to have an epic like this filmed today with the full procession of stars in cameo roles? Sal Mineo and Roddy McDowell (and a metric buttload of others) are gone, but we still have Max von Sydow, although Rafe Fiennes can always play Jesus.

Who else in some of these choice roles?

Tonio Kruger

Happy Zombie Jesus Day!
–MaryAnn Johanson

Jesus is not a zombie. All right. Man, I shouldn’t have to tell you that.
–David Boreanaz, Bones, “The Man in the Morgue”

Happy Easter, MaryAnn.
