A Haunted House (redband trailer)

The only thing that soothes me — though only a little — is the thought that everyone involved with this is deeply embarrassed by their participation and worries about the stain on their soul for contributing to the world’s dreck surplus.

Aie.

No doubt the sort of film which will appeal hugely to people other than me.

A found footage parody film that is far too self-aware for its own good.  This is the problem with parody films nowadays: they’re trying to act smart about how dumb they’re acting… which makes them dumb.  At least in the GOOD parodies – the ZAZ classics like Airplane and Top Secret – they keep that self-awareness down to a tolerable minimum.

Not to mention those good parodies went more for the genre itself and not just specific scenes and sequences and instead let the writing and performances take the lead. And while movies like Blazing Saddles and Airplane definitely poked fun at specific character archetypes, they didn’t feel the need for them to wear signs saying who exactly they were from what exact movie. They gave us in the audience a little credit. I used to love parody movies, now I just dread them.

Not that I don’t love Mel Brooks and the Zucker brothers, but I think they themselves would find it absurd that their films can now be considered subtle and nuanced compared to what passes for spoof comedy these days.

The heck with Brooks and the Zucker brothers.

Whatever happened to the days when the Wayons family was associated with smart humor and intelligent parodies?!

It’s an awful film. MAJ, avoid this one if you can.
