Dead Man Down (trailer)

Okay, I’ll watch Noomi Rapace and especially Colin Farrell in anything, so I’m looking forward to this. (Not that it has a U.K. release date yet or anything.) But isn’t it interesting — and by interesting, of course, I mean depressing as hell — that as soon as director Niels Arden Oplev goes Hollywood, he goes from making a movie about a woman who doesn’t need a man to rescue her to a movie about a woman who has clearly been abused and needs to cajole a man into doing her revenge for her. (Oplev’s previous film was the “original” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. You know, the one that didn’t make anal rape look sexy.)

This movie could still be good. I hope it is. But looks like fairly conventional stuff.

The trailer starts off interestingly enough, but it quickly devolves into standard imagery – woman in her underwear! Woman needing to be rescued! – so I don’t hold out a great deal of hope. Still, I can’t write it off completely…

I just watched the movie and its actually quite a good movie. The trailer makes it seem like an action movie, which it is in the sense that there is action in there, but it’s much more of a study into revenge and what is does to people.

I would recommend watching this movie with an open mind and not get deceived by this trailer.

I think this is some of Colin Farrel’s best work and Noomi Rapace holds her own as well.

I’d give it an 8 out of 10.
