Hollywood is just trolling us now: Disney exec says story doesn’t matter

Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland

Obvious troll — Walt Disney Animation Studios chief technical officer Andy Hendrickson — is obvious. Quoted in Variety:

People say. “It’s all about the story.” When you’re making tentpole films, bullshit.

Variety notes that Hendrickson pointed out that the top 12 all-time domestic grossers are spectacle films, including Disney’s own awful Alice in Wonderland:

The story isn’t very good, but visual spectacle brought people in droves. And Johnny Depp didn’t hurt.

What is there to say to this? We’ve known this for years: It was plain just by looking at Hollywood’s output. Perhaps the notable thing is that the situation is now so entrenched that there’s no longer any need for the studios to pretend otherwise. The tyranny of spectacle has triumphed. If you want a picture of the future of entertainment, imagine a Transformer stamping on a human face — forever.
