See, here’s the thing. We already had a remake of The Evil Dead. It was last year’s The Cabin in the Woods. Okay, it wasn’t precisely the same film, but thematically, Cabin served the same purpose that Dead did 30 years ago: sent up the tropes of a genre using unexpected horror combined with humor.
I see no humor here. I see nothing but grossout. I see no point for this remake at all, except that movies can be gorier today than they could be 30 years ago.
And how much you wanna bet no new Bruce Campbell comes out of this movie?
So depressing…

I would say we already had a remake of Evil Dead, and it was called Evil Dead 2. Really, the first Evil Dead didn’t have much going for it- it’s the “sequels” that made it famous.
At least it has a chainsaw?
I’ve read an interview with the director of the remake… Raimi and his producers had kept the film rights to the “Evil Dead” franchise. The impression I get from the producers and Alvarez is that this is the “Evil Dead” they wanted to make back then but didn’t have the budget for.
I think it looks awesome. Might give “Dead Alive” a run for its money in terms of fake blood used.
I’ve never seen the film, but my understanding is that Evil Dead was a fairly straight forward, low budget, ’80s horror flick. It wasn’t until the sequel that the humor crept in, and ot didn’t go full on satire until Army of Darkness.
I think a more apt comparison would be Evil Dead 2 and The Cabin in the Woods. Those were both satires. The original Evil Dead had a few dark-humor moments, but I think it would be considered more or less straight-horror; similar to what they are shooting for here. As to why you would remake it? Money, probably.
Yeah, I can’t even bring myself to make a zombie torture redneck family joke.
Evil Dead is my favourite horror movie ever. I watched it again recently and it is indeed very funny: Bruce Campbell gets thrown into different furniture units so much it’s practically a running joke. It just happens to be really, really terrifying, which is different from its sequels. There are many horror comedies (Evil Dead 2, Reanimator, Shaun of the Dead, Beetlejuice, Army of Darkness, etc.) but none will give you nightmares like the agoraphobic terror of “Evil Dead.”
I have got to stop reminding myself of this just before sleeping.
