question of the day: What classic films would you like to see inspire a new Star Wars movie?

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Boba Fett

Hey, maybe this Disney-Lucasfilm merger will turn out to be fun! Or a disaster! From Vulture:

Man of Steel and 300 director Zack Snyder said he had no interest in directing the hotly anticipated seventh Star Wars film. But Vulture has learned that while this may be specifically true — he won’t be doing Episode VII — it was a bit of misdirection: He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers. (Go ahead, say it — you know you want to: “ … an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.” Felt good, didn’t it?)

Hoorah…? (As long as it bears no resemblance toSnyder’s Sucker Punch it might be okay.) Anyway, this inspired Scott Meslow at The Week to have a think on what other classic films could do with the Star Wars treatment. Some of his titles:

Mr. Smith Goes to Coruscant
The Midichlorian Candidate
Rebellion Without a Cause
Citizen Hutt
The Man Who Shot Greedo First

Click over to The Week to read his synposes and check out his other titles. They’re funny.

What classic films would you like to see inspire a new Star Wars movie? And what would the story be?

My choice:

Midnight Kessel Run: A down-on-his-luck Jango Fett takes a job hunting down a mildmannered accounant for the Hutts who’s jumped bail. Comedy and adventure ensues on the return trip to Coruscant. Featuring a cameo appearance by Serrano the Hutt.

Might as well rip off The Seven Samurai, having already ripped off The Hidden Fortress

A Fistful of Credits / For a Few Credits More / The Good, the Bad and the Hutts

Heh. I see what you did there. A ripoff of Sergio Leone ripping of Kurosawa? ;-)

I’m convinced that the “Order 66” scene in Revenge of the Sith was inspired by the end of The Godfather anyway, actually.

How about these?
All Quiet on the Caridan Front: an incisive look at the horror of the Galactic Civil War
Cantinablanca: bar owner must choose between love and fighting the Empire
The Treasure of the Sith Madre: a doomed expedition to recover ancient Sith riches
An Airspeeder Named Desire: the crushing personal drama of lower-level residents of Coruscant
The Third Twi’lek: suspenseful mystery set in occupied Cloud City
The Silence of the Shaak: psychological crime thriller pitting Corellian Security agents against refined Rodian serial killer
The Felucian Connection: gritty Bothan police officers investigate spice smuggling between Bothuwui and Felucia

And of course, the classic film that should inspire future Star Wars films:
Star Wars.

After his former partner is murdered, Han Solo gets entangled with a mysterious beauty and an intergalactic chase to track down a figurine of a bird of enormous value. It’s called . . . The Millennium Falcon.

After all, Jabba the Hutt was partially inspired by Sydney Greenstreet, right? It’s a natural fit.

Come to think of it, Greedo reminds me a bit of Peter Lorre as Joel Cairo.

Weird. That was supposed to be a reply to my original comment.

Star Trek (2009).

It was closer to the spirit to the original Trilogy than the Prequels.  (It sure as hell, didn’t feel like Star Trek).

Perhaps, someday, Star Wars will be like Star Wars again, and Star Trek can be like Star Trek again–as nature intended.

Also, I’m reminded of the Blackstar Warrior trailer that hit the Interwebs a while back.  That would be a fun one to see! “Space ain’t black enough to hide from him!”

I was just thinking about that the other day. And yes, a Lando adventure would be all kinds of awesome.

You could probably manage a lot of compelling Film Noir with the Jedi. Navigating a corrupt universe where good and evil start blending into shades of gray, interpreted by beings who are philosophically blind that sort of murkiness, with a serious threat of corruption from the Dark Side if they take the “quicker, easier, more seductive” path.

plan 9 from coruscant – the sith plot to take over the galactic empire by reanimating a little boy who is strong with the force.  oh, wait, that’s the plot of the first trilogy.

Heart of the Dark Side . Basically an adaptation of the novel Shatterpoint, which the author has already admitted is more or less “Star Wars: Heart of Darkness”.
