The Lone Ranger, Oz the Great and Powerful, Iron Man 3 Super Bowl ads

In lieu of a trailer today, here are the gathered Super Bowl ads that ran during the game yesterday for Disney’s upcoming flicks The Lone Ranger, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Iron Man 3.

I’m afraid I’m getting so psyched for The Lone Ranger that I’m bound to be disappointed. Oh my god, Armie Hammer is awfully sexy, isn’t he…

The Lone Ranger opens in the U.S. and Canada on July 3, and in the U.K. on August 9. Damn Disney!

*squee* Steampunk magic!

Oz the Great and Powerful opens in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on March 8.

Okay, that’s intense.

Iron Man 3 opens in the U.K. on April 26, and in the U.S. and Canada on May 3.

(So glad I didn’t have to sit through four hours of football timeouts to see those.)

It’s extended, not extensive…

The Wizard of Oz gets the “Chosen One” syndrome. That’s not a good sign.

Yeah. that’s the feeling I’m getting too – also, nothing really new compared with the trailers I saw months ago. On the other hand, The Lone Ranger looks much better than it has any right to be. As long as it doesn’t descend into generic action movie syndrome, and of course it’s a shame they couldn’t find any native American actors…

That’s the thing that’s going to keep me away from The Lone Ranger, I’m afraid. It’s just insulting these days to cast Johnny “I’m part Cherokee on my great-grandmother’s side or something like that” Depp as Tonto when there are plenty of actual American Indian actors out there. I’m not one to take offense automatically at such things — I love Alec Guinness in Lawrence of Arabia, for example, despite his ethnic inappropriateness. It was a different time, with different standards (right or wrong) and anyway, he gave a deeply respectful, nuanced performance as Prince Feisal.

“But Johnny Depp has star power,” some might say, and I say bullsh*t. You could always cast a young American Indian actor and make him a star, just as I gather they’re trying to make Armie Hammer a major star with this, or as they’ve poured money into trying to make any number of generic central-casting white dudes stars. (Have they given up on Sam Worthington yet?) This is a big tentpole movie about a pop culture icon. The Lone Ranger is the star of the movie, upon which I’m guessing they hope to build a franchise. Why not let him stand out instead of putting him next to the distracting Johnny Depp sideshow?

I will be delighted to be proven wrong about this, and if Johnny Depp gives an honest, straightforward performance as Tonto (within the pulpy parameters of the genre, mind you), I’ll gladly eat that crow that he’s wearing on his head. So far, though, all I see is more “Johnny Depp puts on funny makeup and acts wacky” schtick, which grew tiresome several movies ago.

Considering today’s QotD, why not Johnny Depp as the Lone Ranger instead of Hammer?
