Alternately intriguing and infuriating: it’s very like the sort of movie exuberantly excessive Gatsby himself might have made.
I’m “biast” (pro): love Baz Luhrmann, love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I like it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
An alternately intriguing and infuriating adaptation of the classic novel that pays accidental tribute, in that it’s very like the sort of movie exuberantly excessive Gatsby himself might have made. Leonardo DiCaprio is a fab Gatsby, but the framing story that puts Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway in an asylum changes the story in a way that makes no sense. Overall, one of Baz Luhrmann’s weaker films.

Probably the perfect film for the book, then…
Already disappointed by the casting of DiCaprio and Maguire…something about each of them looks like they’re playing dress-up rather than the, respectively, bold and observant roles of the novel. Mulligan on the other hand, I trust.
