how not to do streaming: ABC screws up the Oscars

Unbelievable. From Variety:

ABC’s Live Oscar Internet Stream Suffers Nationwide Outage

Unexpected demand for ABC’s live stream of the Oscars telecast over the Internet resulted in the video going down for users across the U.S., the network said Sunday.

The live video through the Watch ABC app was “down nationwide due to a traffic overload/greater than expected,” a network rep said in an email. As of 10:45 p.m. Eastern, the feeds were back up, according to the rep, declining to provide additional info.

“Unexpected demand”? Unexpected? It’s the Oscars. The Oscars. No amount of demand can be unexpected.

Yeah, but streaming is hard to get right. And the state of network backbone provision in the USA really isn’t up to this sort of thing.

Of course, if they didn’t insist on smothering it in restrictions about who can’t watch and just let people redistribute peer to peer, it would be trivial.

If only there were video streaming services out there that were able to reliably withstand the load… oh wait! ABC re-broadcasts their shows on Hulu. They could have just put it on there.

But that’s crazy-talk, of course. Gotta have that url or …. um, or else someone might get confused and think Hulu was useful or something?

I don’t know that Hulu is rigged to do a live stream on a global scale. I know it seems like it would be pretty close to the same thing, but it’s really not.
