I am unaccountably intrigued by this. Writer-director Richard LaGravenese has been involved with some satisfying cheese (P.S. I Love You, Water for Elephants), so that gives me a little hope that this will be at least enjoyable, if also perhaps kinda silly. But the idea of a female version of Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker is nice, too.
Of course, neither Harry’s nor Luke’s fate and future power depended upon romance, and neither of their stories featured romance as a major plot point. Still, baby steps…
Also: I bet Emma Thompson and Jeremy Irons will chew up the scenery something fierce.

Hmm.
I read the book. It was… less than impressive. Here’s hoping the movie is an improvement!
I’m not going to see the movie, but I was intrigued enough by the cast to look it up on IMDB. It says that Codie Rimmer plays a character called Horrified Screaming Spectator, which may be the best credit ever. When I read that, I thought: That’s what I feel like every time I turn on a cable news channel. So if nothing else, maybe the film will be a good source of animated GIFs when people want to comment on the news.
I confess it’s a little dispiriting that I should be enthused by a generic coming-of-age just because the protagonist is female, but they’re so few that one has to take what one can get.
And, I have to say, the production design looks great.
It’s Point Pleasant: The Movie!
Too bad the original Point Pleasant was so awful a series that it almost destroyed creator Marti Noxon’s career…
